Evaluate and shift your associations into 3 categories:
1. Disassociation
There are some people you might need to break away from completely. This might not be an easy step to take, but it’s essential. You have to make the hard choice not to let certain negative influences affect you anymore. Decide the quality of life you want to have, and then surround yourself with the people who represent and support that vision.
2. Limited Associations
There are some people who you can spend three hours with, but not three days. Others you can spend three minutes with, but not three hours. Decide how much you can “afford” to be influenced, based on how those people represent themselves.
3. Expanded Associations
Whatever area of your life you want to see improvement in, find those who represents the success you want, the parenting skills you want, the relationship you want, the lifestyle you want, and spend more time with them. Join organizations, clubs, businesses and health clubs where these people are and make friends.

Good People Build Their Lives on a Foundation of Respect
Appreciate life. To show respect, you need manners, good language, to honor rules, and to appreciate differences. Speaking positively, not negatively. Without rules, there is only chaos. Don’t be prejudiced. Treat others the way you want to be treated and you will develop good social skills/habits, make people feel good, earn the respect of others, establish good relationships, be treated better by others, improve self-worth feelings, and build a good, solid reputation.
Honesty Is Still the Best Policy
The best respect is honesty. There’s no such thing as being a bit dishonest. Have integrity and honesty. It’s hard to be honest. Being dishonest means that we aren’t acting like ourselves. It is the worst habit. It can’t be hidden, ruins relationships, attacks our nervous systems, and prevents us from fulfillment. Being honest means you get peace of mind, character and reputation, relationships, wholeness, mental and physical health, and authenticity.
Kind Words Cost Little but Accomplish Much
Being nice and praising others makes everyone feel better. It brings out the best in people. Keep in mind your good traits. Look for what’s good in others.
Real Motivation Comes from Within
Motivate yourself. You need enough desire to attain what you want, a real belief that you can accomplish what you want, and a clear mental picture of yourself achieving what you want. Desire keeps us going when things are the toughest. If we’re always looking for excuses for why we can’t do things, we’ll never find the reasons why we can. The more clearly and more often we picture ourselves doing something, the more likely we are to do it.
Goals Are Dreams with Deadlines
Success is the progressive accomplishment of worthy goals. Life without goals is like going on a trip without a destination. If you set goals, you have motivation, independence, direction, meaning, enjoyment, and fulfillment. Goals are specific dreams with deadlines. Understand the difference between a goal and a wish, write down and specify your goals, categorize and balance your goals, and review your goals regularly.
There’s No Substitute for Hard Work
Hard work is the only thing that makes things happen. It helps us realize our potential, face up to life, feel good, builds character, earns the respect of others, earns self-respect, adds meaning, gets the best results, becomes a habit, and is healthy. Success requires hard work — there are not shortcuts. Work can be fun.
You Have to Give Up Something to Get Something
Equivalent exchange — you have to give up something to get something. Self-discipline is getting yourself to do something even though you don’t feel like it, because the reward for getting it done exceeds the temporary unpleasantness of the task itself. It is delayed gratification. What’s something you really want? What are you willing to give up to get it?
Successful People Don’t Find Time–They Make Time
Time is opportunity, and in order to live fully, we have to learn to make the most of it. If we love life, we’ll treasure our time and use it wisely. Losers waste time; winners use it. I have all the time we need if I plan my day, set time goals, do things bit-by-bit, know your most productive time, and don’t procastinate to waste time.
No One Else Can Raise Your Self-Esteem
Only you can raise your self-esteem. Everyone should feel good about themselves. Self-esteem doesn’t come from being told that you are good. Real self-esteem is respect we have earn from ourselves. Be kind, honorable, productive, and positive to build self-esteem.
The Body Needs Nutrition and Exercise–So Do the Mind and Spirit
No matter how great our technology is, it can’t produce either happiness or fulfillment. Be physically fit – it gives you a practical attitude about the role of your body, and your body should be good in your eye, not compared to someone else’s. Your brain needs mental exercise like your body needs nutrients. People who practice their faith and live by their principles seem to enjoy life at a deeper level. The time-honored values of honesty and kindness lie at the heart of all great spiritual teachings.
It’s OK to Fail–Everyone Else Has
Everyone fails, even Einstein and Edison. Failing comes from trying, but you should learn from your failures. It teaches humility, how to correct our course of action, that we can’t always have what we want, strength of character, perserverance, and that we can survive defeat. Don’t let failure defeat you. Success is how high you bounce after you hit the bottom.
